DUBAI’s Burj Khalifa lit up in the vibrant saffron, white, and green of the Indian flag on Friday evening to mark India’s 79th Independence Day.

The dazzling display, scheduled for 7:50pm, featured the tricolour alongside images of Mahatma Gandhi and slogans such as Har Ghar Tiranga, attracting crowds of onlookers who gathered to capture the moment.

Other landmarks across the UAE also illuminated in India’s national colours.

India’s Independence Day

The day’s celebrations began at 6am at the Consulate General of India in Dubai, where Consul General Satish Sivan hoisted the national flag. Hundreds of Indians, including families, seniors, and children, attended the ceremony dressed in patriotic colours. The national anthem was sung with fervour, and the courtyard was filled with miniature flags, tricolour scarves, and traditional attire reflecting the Indian flag.

In his address, Sivan expressed gratitude to the UAE leadership for “giving the Indian community the space to grow” and praised the contributions of the 4.36 million Indians living in the Emirates. He highlighted India’s progress, including its rise to the world’s fourth largest economy, rapid poverty reduction, and advancements in space, defence, and digital governance. He also spoke of the strong India-UAE relationship, calling it “anchored in trust, shared vision, and mutual growth.”

Celebrations in Dubai

Following the formalities, the Consulate hosted a cultural programme showcasing traditional and contemporary Indian dance and music. The event provided an opportunity for expatriates to connect with their roots and share the significance of Independence Day with younger generations growing up abroad.

Across the UAE, Indian embassies and community groups held flag-hoisting ceremonies and cultural gatherings. The Consulate General of India in Dubai also illuminated its building in tricolour.
